Osteoporosis – Is It Treatable?

OsteoporosisOsteoporosis is a disease that weakens the bones. As the bones weaken, the risk of unexpected, sudden fractures increases. It is a debilitating disease that worsens with time and can restrict the movement of the patient.

The primary cause of osteoporosis is aging. The body is constantly breaking down old bone and rebuilding it with new bone. In a person’s 30s, the body builds more than it removes, but after that the body rebuilds less bone. If bone loss reaches a certain point it is considered osteoporosis. Women are more at risk of developing osteoporosis than men.

There is no cure for osteoporosis; however there are treatments and medications available that can help lower the risk of fractures caused by the disease. Calcium and Vitamin D injections can strengthen the bones, while exercises can enhance the quality of life of the patients.

At Dr. John M. Geiss, we offer a number of treatments for patients suffering from osteoporosis. We evaluate patients thoroughly and then develop the best course of treatment for them. We are going to prescribe medications, possibly injections, that can slow bone loss and ease any pain you may be experiencing. We will also give you an exercise plan to increase muscle strength to relieve pressure on your weakened bones and joints.

All of the treatments indicated for osteoporosis have to be continued for life. Since it is a chronic condition, you will have to take the medications and perform the exercises regularly to gain any benefit from them.

If you are suffering from osteoporosis, give us a call and let’s talk about your treatment options.
